For obvious reasons there hadn’t been much gift-opening that morning. Most people had spent the hours between breakfast and the first activity of the day as they’d spent the previous evening – sitting in groups with friends and family and talking about the quite remarkable weather.

The trio of torment were only too happy to design posters and were diligent in their efforts. Libby sat with them for a while to guide them with the details they needed to include, and she even tried to get involved in the artwork but quickly realised that they didn’t need her, didn’t really want to delegate any of it to her, and were doing a better job than she could anyway. Most importantly, she’d never seen the three of them so content and focused. They lay on their fronts on the floor of the piano room, tongues at the corners of their mouths or foreheads lined with concentration as they drew bright, Christmas-themed designs around clunky lettering. In the end, Libby had to concede that Noah’s idea to involve them was a masterstroke, if only because the sight of those childish scribbles couldn’t fail to entice the most ardently antisocial soul to come along and join in the fun, and that was what they were hoping for. There was no point in organising these things if nobody cared to make the effort. Even so, she was filled with doubt.

Would anybody bother to come to their little singalong? There were no guarantees their events wouldn’t all fall flat, even the carols, which seemed the safest bet, and if nobody came she’d feel a bit silly for trying to organise them. Noah, at least, seemed confident that people would gather at the drawing room’s grand piano at the allotted time and that they’d all have fun. She suspected that would be true for Noah himself if for nobody else, because he seemed very excited at the prospect of playing the grand piano and to have an audience too.

Her suspicions were definitely strengthened by the fact he’d spent a good hour of his morning practising the list of songs they’d picked out. Every so often she’d pass the open door to the grand old drawing room and take a moment to listen. Sometimes he’d be so engrossed he wouldn’t notice her there, but at others he’d catch her eye and give her a dazzling smile. He was pretty good – better than he’d had her believe – and he looked about as content and at ease on a piano stool as she’d ever seen a man look anywhere.

She couldn’t deny that he looked kind of sexy too. It was kind of the same as the suit… a handsome man in a good suit was a sure aphrodisiac for Libby, but a man who could play a cool instrument was almost as hot. Noah, at this precise moment, was rocking both looks with some panache. But she reminded herself that she had reasons to suspect she’d be wise
